         Û  very amateur  songwriter) was  always saying  to Pete  Û
         Û  how difficult  he found  it to  write lyrics  for his  Û
         Û  songs.  Like  many  songwriters,  he  found  creating  Û
         Û  melodies or arrangements easier than writing  lyrics.  Û
         Û  He could have gone out  to try to find a  lyricist to  Û
         Û  work with, but he could just never get around to  it.  Û
         Û  The mainly thesaurus or rhyming style software  tools  Û
         Û  he had come across just did not work for him, either.  Û
         Û  He needed more fundamental help: tools for generating  Û
         Û  lyric ideas!                                           Û

         Û  the birth  of liptikl  No doubt  bored by  Tim's poor  Û
         Û  lyric-writing efforts and his incessant wittering  on  Û
         Û  about  how it  must be  possible to  do something  in  Û
         Û  software, Pete  one day  said: ¶Tim,  you do  realise  Û
         Û  that we could create a generative tool to help you do  Û
         Û  that?÷. That was the defining moment. We talked about  Û
         Û  what we would want it to do, did some quick  searches  Û
         Û  and found nothing out  there quite like what  we were  Û
         Û  thinking. Necessity being the mother of invention, we  Û
         Û  got  to  work  on  it.  After  a  furious  round   of  Û
         Û  prototyping and experimentation,  we felt we  were on  Û
         Û  to something!                                          Û

         Û  how  it  got its  name  Having started  to  build the  Û
         Û  product, we  really needed  to name  it! We  knew the  Û
         Û  kind of qualities  we wanted it  to have and  came up  Û
         Û  with ¶elliptical÷ - it just popped into our heads. We  Û
         Û  were tickled by this as it had a bit of word play  in  Û
         Û  it ¶lip tickle÷, and could be married with some  neat  Û
         Û  imagery.  We  liked  its  quirkiness,  too,  and kept  Û
         Û  thinking   that  ¶tickling   lips÷  was   a  way   of  Û
         Û  stimulating  words  and utterances,  and  teasing new  Û
         Û  prose  into  existence!  So, there  you  have  it, we  Û
         Û  decided on  the product  name ¶liptikl÷  for a  lyric  Û
         Û  generator   that  delivers   unusual,  obscure,   non  Û
         Û  -obvious,  ambiguous  and  unexpected  (and hopefully  Û
         Û  good!) results.                                        Û
