 ² ° ÛÛÛ  in so doing make the reading experience a better one, has    ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  been discussed many times. An interesting view is that the   ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  punchcutter was well aware of the need for subtle            ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  irregularities in the letterforms he cut. It can be          ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  suggested that these irregularities break the systematic     ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  monotony of the reading experience.                          ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ                                                               ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  The theory is that character irregularities will, when the   ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  type is set, give the text a lively pattern, nothing         ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  startling, but with just enough interest to entice the eye.  ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  Perhaps, today the irregularities of punchcutting, once      ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  lost to industrialization, could be reintroduced in an       ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  attempt to reinvigorate the reading experience. This idea    ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  was developed through the design of Kingfisher.              ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ                                                               ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  A slight irregularity has been added to the letters to make  ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  the overall flow of the type seem less rigid. Several of     ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  the lowercase letters, for example, incorporate some degree  ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  of movement and the illusion of a slight slope has been      ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  added to the verticals. All this imparts a very subtle       ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  restlessness to the text. As the font design progressed it   ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  was tested for text-setting suitability. A model double-     ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  page book spread was set up, this was printed using each     ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  new trial version of Kingfisher. Seeing the letters perform  ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  together as text made it easier to weed out problems. It     ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  also made it possible to evaluate the desirable colour of    ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  the developing font. Modifications could be made and slowly  ÛÛÛ ° ²
 ² ° ÛÛÛ  the letters came together.                                   ÛÛÛ ° ²
